Why join the Militia?

Individuals join up with the modern Unorganized Militia for a variety of reasons. Some of them feel that their liberties are being infringed; others want to serve their country, but not in a foreign war; still others feel that their governments have become a threat to not only the liberty of their families but also their safety. Others simply find the training to be enriching, enlightening or fun.

Serve the Country at Home?

The Militia is a defensive organization that serves exclusively in its home state. It can not be deployed to foreign soil by any authority. The Militia is, however, deployable inside of its home state to (as the constitution says) “enforce the laws of the union, suppress insurrections, and repel invasions”. This means that you can render the same service in the Militia that you would render in the US Military, with the exception that you will never have to leave your home state; in most cases, with the exception of training exercises, you won’t have to leave your home county.

Afraid of the Government?

A portion of the American public is growing afraid of their government, yes. The reasons for this are many, but prime among them are evidences of a growing police state, intrusive law enforcement agencies, and threats to the usage of american military on american soil.

The CATO institute, for example, tracks instances of abuses of police power. This includes many things, but is mainly what some people see as a growing trend of increasingly militant police activity in enforcing drug and immigration laws, among others. The CATO institute tracks instances where these paramilitary raids result in the deaths of innocents, nonviolent offenders, or police officers.

Further examples of reasons to fear our government included numerous cited cases of Taser abuse, wherein police forces misuse the Taser weapon system. The Taser is meant to be used to incapacitate suspects when they are noncompliant, without causing permanent damage. Unfortunately police have been abusing their tasers more and more, these enlistees say, and oftentimes it results in the death of the suspect when otherwise no death or even injury may have occured.

You can view coverage of police abuse and police taser abuse on the Militia News Network’s YouTube channel.

A Threat to Liberty?

Other instances of power abuses, militia enlistees say, include the scope of the Patriot Act’s surveillance and arrest powers. They claim that it circumvents the 4th amendment protections against unreasonable search and siezure, and that no warrants shall be issued without probable cause. They claim that it circumvents the 1st amendment protections for freedom of speech and assembly. They claim that it does away with the writ of habaes corpus. These and still other claims are made against the patriot act, and other pieces of legislation.

Some say that the numerous state and federal gun control laws abridge the 2nd amendment. They say that the National Firearms Act and the Gun Control Act form keystones to the numerous and myriad gun control laws stacked above them, all of which are unconstitutional. They say that the State and Federal governments only pursue gun control laws because they fear an armed populace that is capable of revolting against tyranny.

Others say that the Income Tax is unconstitutional, and the government’s continued enforcement of it is nothing short of criminal. They say this for a variety of reasons, and those reasons are beyond the scope of this document. The MRC recommends that you visit the We The People Foundation for more information on the tax protest movement.

Still others say that the reasons are as simple as the government moving away from a representative republic, which it was formed as, to a democratic mob rule state where the ideals of liberty are trampled for the notions of safety and security.

The reasons why the Militia exist, and why some people would want to join it, are many. But ultimately it comes down to the question of whether or not a citizen feels that their country is in danger, from within, or from without. If the answer is “yes”, then the Militia may be for you.

Enriching, Fun Training?

The Unorganized Militia’s training programs are designed by long-time veterans, many with combat experience, and almost all with experience in the US Military. The training is designed to parallel, and in many cases duplicate, the training that Regular Army soldiers receive. Militia training teaches leadership, teamwork, integrity, honesty, and respect. It instills a sense of confidence, selfless service, and honor in those who undergo it. The training is physically demanding, but by many accounts, it is the best time you will have had, and will create a new character and new memories that will last with you forever.

Is Militia Training Job Training?

While some skills you learn in the Militia – such as leadership, teamwork, and management of groups – will indeed help you in your job, other Militia job skills are not necessarily transferrable. Unlike the US Military, the Unorganized Militia’s job is quite small and specific; most of our training revolves around combat, disaster relief, and search and rescue. We also do some training in paramedic skills, vehicular maintenance, and things related to the immediate tasks of fighting a war. You may also undergo some amount of training in media publishing and relations if you come to work with the Militia News Network. Militia training also does not count towards college credit in any institutions that Militia Recruiting Command is currently aware of.

What about Pay and Benefits?

The Unorganized Militia cannot promise a salary to any enlistee or officer. It is a volunteer organization, and our funding is drawn from our membership itself, or from generous benefactors. The costs of training, equipping, and running the daily operations of the Militia unit is paid by the Militia itself. Usually these costs are small and are of no serious detriment to the Militia membership, but when they are, Militia leadership attempts to raise funds to help cover expenses. There is also a common sense of goodwill and sharing between Militia unit members; you will often find that your needs are covered by other members when times are hard. But while you may not receive compensation for your services, you can be found wealthy in a sense of pride and accomplishment for your service to your community; in the newfound strength of character and courage you will find through the training; and in the new friends you will make through your militia unit. And there may be other perks to your militia service; for example, MRC recommends (and requires, under our doctrine) that militia units attempt to file for Civilian Marksmanship Program affiliate status, wherein members can acquire surplus US Military firearms at a reduced price. Other programs will be forthcoming.

I heard Militias are illegal. Will I get arrested?

Militias are not illegal. They are constitutionally sanctioned and legally protected under the US Code. Please see our page regarding this question, About the Militia, to discuss this further. Suffice it to say that, at some times, Militia units have been the target of unlawful government raids. This is an unfortunate reality, and the way that the Militia unit responds to it – in court, or on the battlefield – is strictly at the discretion of the individual Militia unit.
